2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur Clarke
Written in 1968, this science fiction novel was made famous by Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of Arthur Clarke’s work. The story features aliens, artificial intelligence, and deep questions about humanity. For those wanting to delve deeper, Eric has copies of the second book in the series, 2010: Odyssey Two, available.
Teatime for the Traditionally Built by McCall Smith
The tenth novel the “Botswana's No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” series, Precious Ramotswe must once again use her skills to unravel a mystery. The owner of a local soccer team suspects a traitor on the squad is deliberately sabotaging games. Despite her complete ignorance of the sport, Ramotswe and her feisty assistant agree to look into the matter. Now if she can only keep her van running…
Fans can follow the television series based on the books on HBO.
The Mammoth Cheese by Sheri Holman
Inhabitants of a small southern town seek to emulate their ancestors in presenting another mammoth cheese to a U. S. president. Love, politics, and family intertwine. Sheri Holman is the other of several critically acclaimed novels including Dress Lodger.
Second Glance by Jodi Picoult
When an Abenaki Indian burial ground is slated to become a strip mall, strange phenomena starts occurring in a small Vermont town. Ross Wakeman, a ghost hunter who has never seen a ghost, investigates in hopes of connecting with the other side. What he discovers is beyond anything he could dream of in this world-or the next.
Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin
When four children are found murdered in medieval Cambridge, the Catholic community blames Jews for the atrocity. Anti-Semitism nearly erupts into riots, forcing King Henry II to intervene. Hoping scientific investigation will catch the true killer, the king calls for the best medical experts. When the “master of the art of death” turns out to be a woman, Adelia faces danger from the church and the killer. She must examine the victims and retraces their last steps before the killer strikes again. This fascinating medieval mystery is “"a deliciously dark and effective concoction of historical fiction, suspense, romance, adventure and forensics. Franklin deftly recreates a vivid medieval England and introduces a memorable cast of seamy inhabitants" (Miami Herald).
Light on Snow by Anita Shreve
A touching coming of age story, this novel is about second chances and redemption. After a 12 year old girl and her widower father find an infant abandoned in the snow their lives are changed forever.
