A Brief History
Opened March 4, 1990, the Edith Garlow Johnston Lakes Library was dedicated and named for Edith Garlow Johnston, an active library supporter and wife of Country Johnston, the Lake Park developer who donated the property for the building.  The library underwent a $40,000.00 renovation (interior and exterior) from November 09 – May 2010.  Kellerman Construction Company completed the task.

Set among majestic, moss draped oaks in beautiful Lake Park, the library is located directly across from the Lake Park U.S. Post Office and adjacent to a Lowndes County park. Francis Lake is right across the street.
Grace Clay was the first manager of this library, the third installment in a five libraries building campaign, funded in part by a Georgia grant program. Clay was succeeded by Dorothea Sutphin, Janice Daugharty, Geneva Taylor, Essie Parker, Beth Zeigler, Maggie Castor, Karen Black, and Lisa Brower.  Jeanna Allums is the current manager.

What Makes This Neighborhood Library Unique?
This library's strengths lie first in its animated staff that have boundless energy and are eager to assist patrons! Customer service is their #1 priority.  An inviting place to sit back and get comfortable with a good book, children's programs and community outreach are additional strong points.

Available is a wide variety of book collections, including crafts, gardening, parenting, and home improvement, along with a fine assortment of fiction, large print books, videos, DVDs and audios. The children's collection is also top of the line, with some of the latest fiction for little ones on the market.

In December 2010, in honor of its 20th anniversary, this library put together a time capsule to be opened in 2030.  Contained within are notes and letters from SGRL staff, memories and thoughts from patrons, branch statistics, branch information, library documents (such as card, card application, internet policy, etc.), popular book and movie data, and a newspaper.
