Dig Into Reading
We often take for granted what’s right beneath our feet—our vast natural resources, the archaeological clues to our past, the fossil record, the animals that live there, the natural wonders of caves and the human-made tunnels, sewers and such that we depend on. Through reading we are able to dig beneath the surface and uncover these rich treasures that often go unseen.

HOW TO REGISTER
Registering for the Summer Reading Program is easy. Bring your library card to any of the six South Georgia Regional Library branches and fill out a registration form. When you sign up you will receive a reading log and incentive card.
TICKETS & INCENTIVE CARDS
For every completed reading log you turn in, you will receive a ticket for the grand prize drawing to be held on July 27th at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Public Library during the annual Summer Celebration from 2 to 4 P.M. You can also earn small prizes along the way. For up to the first five logs you turn in you will get a “surprise” out of the prize box, as well as coupons and other incentives. You must have your incentive card with you in order to get your prize, so please keep track of your card!
PRIZES
This year the grand prize winners for each age group will receive one Kindle Fire HD tablet and branch-level winners will receive gift cards and other prizes to be announced.

Children
In addition to weekly story times and family movie showings, all branches of the South Georgia Regional Library System will offer a lineup of fun and entertaining activities for children of all ages such as, dinosaur racing, sand painting, fossil digging, yarn art, veggie crafts, rock painting, and more! Some children’s programming highlights include:
Summer Reading Program Kickoff w/Paul Campiglia
For this year’s kickoff Paul Campiglia, Professor at Valdosta State University and Percussionist for the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, will lead children on a multimedia musical journey that features hands-on time with musical instruments and ends with a performance.
Just Dig It w/ Cliff Patton
Cliff Patton, a noted magician, ventriloquist, and balloon artist, will delight children of all ages with his pal Skeeter, using entertaining stories to encourage children of all ages to dig in to reading!
Teens & Adults
Children aren’t the only one’s that get to have all the fun during the Summer Reading Program, Teen and Adult participants will also have ample opportunities to go beneath the surface this year through a varied assortment of programming. Some highlights include:
Create Your Own Digital Family Album w/ Jason Brown
Jason Brown, Mass Media Professor for Valdosta State University, will lead a program that instructs participants on the tools and services available for free over the internet on how to create and share and online multimedia family album.
Just Dig It w/Paul Campiglia
Paul Campiglia will present an interactive multimedia timeline on the evolution of music from Classical to Rock!
Archeology w/ Dr. Donald Thieme
Dr. Donald Thieme, a Geoscience professor from Valdosta State University, will give a program educating attendants on the use of ground penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves in Georgia. Participants in this program will also learn about Dr. Thieme’s work excavating Roman sites and newly discovered ancient roadways and artifacts.
I Dig eBooks! (Introduction to eReaders) w/ Eric Mathis
Reference and Adult Services Librarian, Eric Mathis, will give participants of this program an introduction to e-readers, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to search for and download free eBooks and digital audiobooks to an eReader using your library card and the Georgia Download Destination eBook service.
Cave Diving w/ Guy Brient
Guy Brient, a pioneering cave diver, will give a presentation on safety rules and procedures that have evolved in the field since the 1970s. Guy, will also be showcasing images from recent dives as well as demonstrating the use of diving equipment.
SUMMER CELEBRATION
Saturday, July 27th, 2 to 4pm
Join us for the Summer Reading Program’s Summer Celebration on Saturday, August 4th from 2 to 4pm at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Library. Booths will be set up inside the library for artists, authors, and local organizations, while water slides, bounce houses, and dunking booth will be set up on the library’s front lawn. Bring your family for a fun-filled two hours that culminates with the Summer Reading Program Grand Prize drawing!
