Patron Q&A

If I win at the branch level, am I still eligible for the system-wide prize?
Yes, you may win both the branch and system prize.

Will I get a ticket for attending a program with my child?
No, you must attend an age appropriate program in order to receive a ticket.

Do I need to register at each branch in order to attend programming there?
No, as long as you are registered at one branch in the South Georgia Regional Library system you are eligible for an event participation ticket.

Do I have to turn in my reading log at the branch where I registered?
No, your log may be turned in at any South Georgia Regional Library branch.

May volunteer time and reading time be combined to reach my 30 hours?
Yes, combining is allowed and encouraged!

May I read anything to reach 30 hours?
As long as what you are reading is at your reading level, you may read anything that interests you.  We will not give credit for material below your level.

How many chances can I get to enter the prize drawings?
There is no maximum number of entries.  The more you read, volunteer, and attend programs, the better your odds of winning!

If I read to my child, can both of us count the books or time?
Your child will get credit, but the adult will not.  We only give credit for reading material at your level.

Does online reading count i.e. a newspaper or magazine website?
Yes.

Do the books on tape/CD that I listen to count?
Yes.

What do I get for being the person who reads the most?
There is no prize for reading the most, but the more you read the more entries you will have in the drawing.

Do I have to register for the Summer Reading Program to attend events?
No, registration is not required.  Prizes, however, will only be given to those enrolled in the program.

Do I have to read material from the library?
No. You are welcome to purchase literature or read material you already have at home.

If I register at one location, do the programs I attend at other branches count?
Yes.

My child lives out of state but is visiting for the summer, may she/he participate in the Summer Reading Program?
Yes.  Out of state children/grandchildren may be registered for the program under their parent/guardians card.

Do I have to have a PINES card to register for the SRP?
Yes.

Program Descriptions

Children Summer Reading Events

Anansi – The Ginger Bread Players will be performing stories from the Anansi legend.  These West African tales teach morals and expose children to the rich culture of Africa.

Okefenokee Joe – This presenter will be teaching children about the animals and insects which reside in our region. This interactive presentation will give children the opportunity to see wildlife up close, touch snakes, and ask there questions to an expert.  Okefenokee Joe is known across the world as an authority in field herpetology, and is a fascinating wildlife interpreter.  His video field guide, "Know Your Snakes” is used throughout the world by schools, colleges, hospitals, civic organizations and the US military.  Okefenokee Joe is fully licensed, and recognized as an educator in the States of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Movies – Two insect related movies will be shown each week.

Astro Bug Presentation – An Astro insect expert and costumed assistant will teach children about common insects.  Parents will be able to take photographs of their children with the “giant bug” mascot.

The Great Bug Hunt – This insect themed scavenger hunt will follow the Astro Bug presentation.  Children will search the library for hidden plastic bugs.

Miss Spider’s Tea Party – Participants will enjoy a spider themed story time and have snacks.

Crafts – Children will be able to participate in a variety of crafts including a project to create an insect out of plastic water bottles and other recycled material.

Bag a Bug Lunch – Children and their parents are invited to bring their lunch to the library and listen to stories about bugs. This event is open to all.

Teen Summer Reading Programs

MySpace Safety – Teens are using social networking sites in record numbers.  Parents are often nervous about what their children are doing on MySpace and how to keep them safe.  This program is designed to teach teenagers and their parents about staying safe while on MySpace.

Mehindi Tattoo Program – A local tattoo artist will be teaching teens about the history and process of getting a tattoo.  Teens will then be able to get a temporary Mehindi tattoo themselves.  This program requires parental permission as the dye in Mehindi ink can cause irritation in some people.

Bug Fear Factor – Teens will be challenged to eat bizarre and disgusting looking food.

Hot Wheels – The Lakeland Library will be hosting a car expert to talk about automotive modifications.

Fitness and Meditation – As part of the Metamorphosis theme, Teens will be shown ways to change their body and mind through exercise and meditation.  This program has yet to be confirmed.

Movie – Two movies will be shown for teens during the summer reading program.

Photo Manipulation Art Show – This Lakeland Library program will allow teens to show off their creative talents with photo manipulation.  Area teens will display their work in the library.

Adult Summer Reading Programs

Genealogy – Learn to research your family history with this introductory course on genealogy.  The instruction will include how to access Ansectry.com free through the South Georgia Regional Library system.

Write Your Own Story – This multipart workshop will teach patrons how to begin writing their autobiographies.  This course will be taught by a Valdosta State University professor and is free to all adult library patrons.

Yoga – Adults interested in learning Yoga are invited to attend this introductory class.

Bunco – Learn the game that is sweeping the nation. Only adults may attend this program.
